The History of Slots and the Difference between Online and Land Based Games
The Slot Machine (also known as the fruit machine in England and poker machine in Australia) was originally founded in the mid 1800’s on the basics of poker. Developed by Sittman and Pitt of Brooklyn NY, five drums held 50 card faces in the machine; when the drums spun, players would hope to get a profitable poker hand. Rather than winning money, however, players would receive prizes such as free drinks and cigars from the establishment they were located in (typically bars, saloons and liquor stores).
In 1887, the one-armed bandit was invented by Charles Fey, which he later called the Liberty Bell. Utilizing simpler automatic mechanisms, he changed the five drums to three reels and replaced the card faces with five symbols: horseshoes, diamonds, spaces, hearts, and liberty bells. Instead of rewarding users with prizes, players could win up to ten nickels. A pattern of bells would signal for each win, allowing attendants to compensate the player with the appropriate amount of money.
Since the Liberty Bell was becoming incredibly popular, Mills Novelty Co. introduced their version of the game, called the Operator Bell. This machine used fruit symbols instead, introducing the famous cherry icon.
In 1964, the first fully electromechanical slot machine, named Money Honey, was invented by Bally. This was the first game to provide an automatic payout to players, up to 500 coins, without the help of attendants. The popularity of this machine led to the development of more electronic games and video slots. Soon, the iconic lever wasn’t even important. As the games progressed, the traditional three reel look was slowly being replaced by the three, five or even seven reel video slot machines.
The transition from land based slot machines to online slot machines came fast during the mid-1990. Even though this new gambling method was quickly accepted, many participants were skeptical. Would playing the games at home rather than at energetic casinos change the enjoyment level? The answer is no. Online slots are incredibly convenient because they can be played from anywhere at any time. In addition, they bring games to countries where land based gambling is prohibited. They save on traveling expenses and give more options to players. New people to the game can practice until they feel confident in their abilities without losing any money.
Both land based and online slot machines include progressive jackpots and bonuses for players. They both allow players to communicate with representatives quickly, whether it is in person or online via live chat. Both machines offer advanced graphics. A major difference would be payment options. With land based casinos, you exchange cash for chips and play away. With online casinos, all transactions must be made through credit cards or online banking programs. Although the risk of security breach with these casinos is low, it is possible, thus this imposes a small risk.
The choice is up to the player. Either way, slot machines have been entertaining people for years and continue to be a staple in the casino community.
