History of Spades
Spades is a truly American game, originating in the late 1930’s and gaining popularity in the 1940’s. It came from the likes of games such as Whist and Bridge. It is believed that college students in Cincinnati, Ohio developed it by combining the two games. The game took off during the Second World War, being famously played by the soldiers, due to its easy and quick nature. After the war, the game continued gaining popularity when the veterans brought it back home. Due to the GI Bill it spread among college students and families alike.
As of late, Spades is considered the #1 partnership game in the United States. It was inducted into the 2006 Grand Prix World Series of Classic Card Games championship and can be regularly played online. Some similar games to Spades include Hearts and Oh Hell.
