The bill allowing the state of Delaware to bring table games to its three racetrack casinos was hastily signed by the governor last week. Lawmakers in the state approved the legislation on Thursday and by the end of that day Delaware Governor, Jack Mitchell signed the bill into affect.
A spokesman for Governor Mitchell estimated that table games could be up and running by this summer at the three casinos, Delaware Park, Dover Downs and Harrington Raceway. Each of these locations currently only offer slot machines and the addition of table games will be a welcome addition.
Although the news is not so great for competitor, Atlantic City, Delaware decided to get with the times and joined the state of Pennsylvania who also legalized table game in their state in early January 2010.
A gaming analyst reported to the Atlantic City newspaper that the combination of Delaware and Pennsylvania could take away as much as 15% of the Boardwalk's table games revenue. The analyst also added that the revenue decline will not likely be too drastic thanks to the 2011 scheduled grand opening of the Revel casino in Atlantic City. This is a $2.5 billion dollar project and is a real glimmer of hope for their declining economic condition.
"Atlantic City gets hit by both Pennsylvania and Delaware because they sit within the heart of our feeder markets," stated the Chairman of Morowitz Gaming Advisors, Cory H. Morowitz, who believes that the Delaware table games would bring in customers from Washington DC and Baltimore.
In all, the approval of table games for the state of Delaware will be a positive one as new jobs will be created and casino enthusiasts will be able to enjoy something other than slots.
