Binion's Gambling Hall and Hotel (formerly known as Binion's Horseshoe) located in Downtown Las Vegas will be shutting down operations on the hotel sector of their establishment starting on the 14th of December. Management cites the failing economy and plummeting hotel rates for the closer. Though they are stated as saying they hope to reopen their doors sometime in the indefinite future it remains unclear when a restoration will become possible.
Despite all the hooplah surrounding the closure there is a bit of good news for poker fans, though the hotel portion will be shutting its doors, the actual casino including its legendary poker hall will remain open to the general public.
Binion's which was founded in 1951 by Benny Binion is best known for serving as the original home of the World Series of Poker . The annual event which began in 1970s was created by then president of the company Jack Binion to draw business to the casino. Little did he know the event would grow to become one of the World's largest and most respected competitions. Though Binion's itself was passed over for a larger venue in recent years there is no denying the monumental effect it has had on the Poker world. We can only hope that this partial closure does not foretell further troubles down the road for this piece of poker history.
This is the second time the establishment has closed its doors in the last decade. The first time coming shortly after Becky Behnen took controlling interest in the company a move that resulted in the WSOP event and Horseshoe name rights being sold to Harrah's Entertainment.
