Major casino operators in Macau, the largest casino industry in the world, are facing harsh realities as water reservoirs run dry and the struggle to provide clean water to their casinos becomes a nightmare.
The casino operators may be looking at as little as 10 days of clean water before supply runs out according to some forecasters.
If Macau casinos run out of water, it would be catastrophic to their economy as they are just beginning to bounce back from the recession.
The hotels have just installed thousands of luxury bathtubs and the city has many attractions that use water. The industry is preparing for this disaster and will have to bring in bottled drinking water in the event of the reservoirs drying up.
The reservoirs across the Chinese border in Zhuhai, which normally supply their water, are drying up because of a drought which has led to the limited supply and a frantic struggle for answers has begun. The country has an already fragile water system and many years of poor water management have shown their consequences.
Analysts for CLSA, a brokerage that covers Macau's gaming industry have said that the special administrative regions branch of government will most likely step up to do whatever is needed to insure drought protection for its most prominent source of revenue.
Everyone seems to be talking about water preservation and now we are finally realizing why. The very real problem facing the Macau casinos has opened the eyes of many to the importance of preserving one of our most important resources.
