 The Harrah's Cherokee Casino and Hotel in North Carolina are doing their best to fight a recent norovirus outbreak from threatening their customers. The outbreak which first struck the casino on Jan. 12th is thought to be responsible for the sickness of over 250 workers and guests.
Noroviruses are notorious for causing epidemic stomach problems because of their extremely infectious nature. These outbreaks usually strike most devastatingly in closed or semi-closed communities where direct and indirect contact happens regularly because the virus can live on untreated services for days. They can also be hard to fight since their natural resistance to most detergents and alcohols makes them difficult to kill.
Harrah's is currently doing the only thing you really can do and that is clean common surfaces regularly and thoroughly with bleach while encouraging people to practice proper hygiene. Door knobs, escalators handrails and bathrooms are being treated hourly with a strong bleach solution and slot machines are being treated every other hour.
"They're doing everything humanly possible," said Jackson County Board of Health Director, Paula Carden. "They're notifying guest and employees, and they're telling employees who are sick to stay home."
State epidemiologist David Bergmire-Sweat appears to think that their steps are working. He points out that relatively few of the casino's 7,500 daily visitors have become ill stating that it should be safe to go to the casino even if the outbreak seems large.
There are currently no plans to shut down the casino.
